In photography, this is called lens flare. It is caused when light enters the lens at such an angle that it doesn't focus properly on the film.

However, this appears to be a computer-generated image. Photographic lens flare is generally not this defined in shape.

Reply:Circle of confusion

Reply:The effect is called flare and it isn't a photograph, it's a computer generated image (CGI). They are not even remotely the same thing.
Reply:lense flare
Reply:They are reflections inside the lens, sometimes call aberrations.
Reply:It's either glare or refractrion, I'd say I'm more confident in refraction myself.
Reply:i like to use that lighting when i do my pictures in photoshop, it is found under..

photoshop:

-filters

-render

-lighting effects

hope that helps.
Reply:Those are called 'lens flares' and these are artificially generated. This is an odd pic, because back in 1992or 1993 I made a model of exactly the same satellite when we were working on a project for NASA called EOS, the Earth Observing System. The only thing was my model was much better than this one.
