When is the correct time to prune back our Weigelia and Aster bushes?

My husband thinks they both should be cut down to within 4to6 inches from the bottom, and I need to know the correct way before he cuts them.

Thank you very much,

Charlotte

Please don't let him do it! The asters can be cut back or allowed to die back from a heavy frost, then cleaned up. The weigela can be given a haircut, or a light pruning if it gets out of hand, but should not be pruned at all if you can help it.

Weigelas come in many varieties and sizes. If the one you have is too big for its spot, move it somewhere else and replace it with one of the dwarf varieties like "Midnight Wine".
